RAVAGE

Course

RAVAGE (2023-2024)

My learnings and contributions throughout RAVAGE: An event and project management course in collaboration with Jelling Music Festival.

CONTEXT

RAVAGE is an educational program within event coordination, project management, and personal leadership created in collaboration between Jelling Music Festival and Ungekulturhuset Værket, a cultural center for the youth in the city of Vejle in Denmark.

OPPORTUNITY

This educational program allowed me and like-minded people to create, coordinate, and manage events from start to finish. In addition to learning project management, I discovered that my skills in graphic design can be used to strengthen the marketing of these events and the branding of the Ravage group itself.

Project one: Logo design

THE "BUNKER" OFFICE

Starting in RAVAGE, we needed to spice up the office in which we would spend a lot of our time planning events and participating in workshops about project management, copywriting, and the like.

The result was four logo proposals from which the group voted for the best candidate representing the office space we would be working in.

Logo udkast 2 for Bunker logo projektet for Ungekulturhuset Værket
Logo udkast 3 for Bunker logo projektet for Ungekulturhuset Værket

The group voted for proposal #1 as shown below.

Additionally, a poster was designed using typography inspired by the logo. The typography composition illustrates a staircase reflecting the office's logo.

Project two: Car wrap design

THE RAVAGE BUS/VAN

As Ravage developed, a van dubbed by the name "Ravage Bus" has become an important vehicle for the group when organizing and executing events, doubling as a stage with its foldable roof and built-in speakers.

Sketches

When tasked with designing the van, it was expected to be seen by thousands of people at upcoming events such as Roskilde Festival, Spot Festival in Aarhus, and Jelling Musikfestival.
It was crucial that the van represents the Ravage group in a meaningful way and communicates its goals and story.

Artboard

Front

The result was two prints, one for each side, illustrating Ravage's journey. The adjacent image is the front side simply displaying the name, the website address, and a "rock on" hand gesture expressing the energy, that the group brings to events.

Back

Shown in the image above, the back side ties together the message of Ravage's journey with the use of the dotted line and includes small hand-drawn illustrations representing several events and goals of the group - ranging from small to large, workshops to festivals. Their purpose is to give the impression, that every member of the group has contributed with a drawing, in the same way they have contributed with hard work and engaged in event management.

Project three: Marketing poster

SENSOMMERFEST PT. 1

One of the most notable events Ravage created and managed was "Sensommerfest" meaning "late summer festival" in Danish.
An opportunity to celebrate up-and-coming music artists, enjoy the last bit of summer weather, and reach more of the youth in the city of Vejle, putting Ungekulturhuset in the mouths of locals.

The goal required attention-grabbing marketing material, resulting in five artist promotional social media posts, and a poster was designed and published online and printed for locals to see in the city's high schools or "gymnasiums" in Danish. The adjacent image showcases a poster placed at the entrance of a high school in Vejle.

Project three: Social media posts

SENSOMMERFEST PT. 2

Social media marketing was part of the process of the project and important for the image of Ungekulturhuset. The images below showcase five of the promotional posts for artists performing at the event. A common thread throughout the posts is the repeating layout, colors, typography, and title "Sensommerfest" bringing cohesion and establishing a design language for the entire event in coherence with the poster showcased above.

Project four: City sign design

VEJLE VEJFEST

For this festival project named "Vejle Vejfest" translating to "Vejle Street Festival", I was designated to design some of the decorations. The small festival's purpose is to celebrate the upcoming students of the new school year. The goal was to give the environment a witty and vibrant feel. Below is my proudest contribution to this festival project.

I came up with a parody design of the city's road sign displayed when driving into the city of Vejle. The design takes the original road sign with its personality-lacking buildings and replaces them with iconic landmarks and buildings in the city of Vejle, whilst designed in the same style, thus making it personal to the people living here. The three landmarks illustrated are:
1. Bølgen: The wave (a building complex).
2. Vindmøllen: The windmill (iconic for its beauty and history).
3. Fjordenhus: Harbor building by Olafur Eliasson.

Project five: T-shirt merch design

RAVAGE MERCH

Approaching the latter half of the year-long education program of Ravage 2023/2024, we felt that branded uniforms were needed so I began the sketching process, bringing the whole group and team along with my idea generation and offered different creative directions.

FIRST APPROACH

Going back and forth with the rest of Ravage, we realized the first design approach did not represent the group to its fullest potential. With renewed feedback going back to the drawing board, the result was the two sketches showcased below.

SECOND APPROACH

Sketch #1

Sketch #2

Draft #1

Sketch #2 gave a resounding yes in the room when presented. The sketch was then refined, and elements like the hand were given its first rough outline traced with the assistance of an arm cutout of an arm from a painting. The result is the first draft showcased in the adjacent image.

After refining the design to its core elements, the final design stays true to the values of the group and includes Ravage's tagline "kultur-skabere" meaning "culture creators" in Danish. The final and agreed-upon design is shown below.

This t-shirt and hoodie print design was my final contribution to Ravage regarding graphic design. The event coordination and project management course, Ravage, undoubtedly taught me a lot of valuable skills. However, this case study seeks to give you an insight into the creative cooperation and communication made within the group and between the event teams and the participants - as well as the design accomplishments made along the way.

"Noah's skills have been a gift for the newly started project, Ravage, in 2023 at Ungekulturhuset Værket in Vejle. Noah is thorough in his work and has used criticism throughout his creative process to adjust accordingly. We are proud to have had him on our team."

Anna Rønberg Holgersen

Cultural educator at Ravage

“Noah is an excellent, thorough graphic designer. In the 'Ravage' program he designed the t-shirt, bus, created social media content and made poster design. I highly recommend!”
